The challenges facing the forests of New England have changed since the founding of NEFF in 1944, but are still significant. Many more landowners own smaller parcels of land and retain ownership for shorter periods of time. The goals of each successive owner often differ. The development value of forest land frequently exceeds its potential for forestry uses. Meanwhile, demand for New England's high quality forest products has also increased on a regional, national and international scale. These markets provide landowners with more incentive to manage their forests, but also increase the opportunities for destructive forest practices.   The challenge for foresters, landowners, and other natural resource professionals today is to develop methods of providing both products and amenities for humans from the forest, while protecting the processes that shape the development of forest communities. For over 50 years, NEFF has demonstrated that well-managed working forests, both publicly and privately owned, can provide the owner and the community with the prime ingredients for healthy living: clean air and water, sustainable production of an array of forest products, healthy forests for hiking and relaxation, diversity of wildlife and habitats, periodic income, and a sustainable local and regional economy supported by renewable natural resources.
